Co-founders of 1200kms for Kids, Gary Richardson and Trevelyan Bale were inspired to launch the event two years ago after personal experiences with both Sydney Children's Hospital and The Royal Children's Hospital, Brisbane. Their passion is a true inspiration.

Adam Check, Chief Executive of Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation says, "It is thanks to the hard work of community fundraisers like 1200Kms for Kids that Sydney Children's Hospital is able to provide the very best of care to the thousands of sick children who come through our doors each year. I urge everyone to get behind this wonderful fundraiser and help make a difference in the lives of seriously ill children."

The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation is so appreciative to once again be the co-beneficiary from the incredible 1200kms for Kids Charity Bike Ride in 2009. For the third year, a group of amazing people are taking on the gruelling challenge to ride 1200kms in 5 days to raise money for sick kids.

Co-founders of the event, Trevelyan Bale and Gary Richardson first started the ride in 2006 after personal experiences with both the Royal Children’s Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospital. Their vision has resulted in over $65,000 being raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital alone.

In 2009, the 1200kms for Kids team is hoping to raise $100,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation. Money raised through this year’s ride will go towards funding respiratory research. Every year, more than 500 children are admitted to the Royal Children’s Hospital for respiratory related illnesses such as cystic fibrosis, bronchiolitis, asthma, chronic and recurrent bronchitis, and persistent cough in children.

Respiratory research at the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation is helping little patients like Flynn who stopped breathing twice at birth, and again in his mother's arms when he was just two months old.

Nathan

After being resuscitated by his terrified mum, baby Flynn was rushed to Rockhampton Hospital by ambulance, before being transferred to the Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane for specialised care.

After an incredible number of tests and treatment for a child his age, Flynn was diagnosed with a condition called laryngomalacia (soft larynx) and a narrow windpipe. This means his upper airway was collapsing, preventing him from being able to breathe, and his lower airway was extremely narrow - adding to his breathing problems.

The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation cannot thank the riders of 1200kms for Kids enough for everything they are doing to work wonders for sick kids like Flynn. We wish them all the best for their 1200km journey.
